Anxiety at Work (GMTK Jam 2025)
Goal
Get the highest possible score by doing work
How to Play
Recommended: use the maximize button on the bottom right
Each turn one of the "preconscious thoughts" is selected to become the conscious thought, affecting work progress and/or emotional states.
Emotional states (on the left), create new preconscious thoughts to be selected each turn, the distribution depends on the emotional state's number.
The player doesn't always get to choose the next conscious thought, the player takes turns with the "impulse" in selecting. The impulse selects one of the options randomly.
The game is 30 turns - That's 15 player turns and 15 impulse turns.
Hover over any thought or emotional state to see its details.
Work Progress:
Each turn the task progress goes down by 1 if not doing work.
After progressing 3 times in a task, it is complete and the score goes up permanently.
There's no retry button, refresh the page if you want to give it another try.
Ramblings & Excuses
I'm pretty sure the game isn't fun, because it's mostly random and not balanced.
I didn't get anyone to playtest it before the jam ended, so I hope it at least somewhat makes sense to people.
I made this game for the GMTK 2025 Jam, because the theme "loop" made me think of my own struggles with self criticism and rumination loops.
Technical Details
Made in TypeScript using Phaser 3
Used Photopea to draw the visual assets.
Avoided using any AI. (I usually use Windsurf auto-complete to save time, but I disabled it for this jam)
